Hydrogen Systems Debunked

I love it when I am right!

A few of months ago I wrote an article debunking the myth that on board hydrogen generating devices could save gas. I just spotted this article on Popular Mechanics web site from last month doing the exact same thing.

I love that he determined that these systems only produce a few liters of hydrogen that get introduced into an engine that is pumping hundreds of liters of air… at idle. We both came to the same conclusion… that far less than 1% of the in coming “air” would be hydrogen. Hardly enough to do any good.

Popular Mechanics (in conjunction with Dateline NBC) had the resources to test a car on the EPA’s testing equipment. That’’s something I suggested being done in my own article. They showed a slight decrease in mileage with the system turned on. This is due to the extra load on the alternator to generate the electricity needed to make hydrogen from water.

The bottom line… these systems don’t even make enough power, or save enough gas to cover themselves. They don’t work.

Like I said… I love it when I am right.
