XBox 360 as Media Extender

December 29, 2008

Well, my sons got an XBox 360 for Christmas. I just wired it into my network and set it up as a media extender to my desktop PC running Vista Home Premium and Media Center. I was a little worried at first. The first time it tried to launch Media Center on the XBox it crashed. It took three tries, but it has been working very well ever since.

I have ripped some movies from DVDs using DVDFab Platinum 5.1. I used the XBox 360 settings with minimal adjustments (WMV, 1500 kbps, 702 x ??? resolution). The files are about 1.6-1.7 GBs (so far). The video quality has been excellent. To find the movies in Media Center I have to navigate to Pictures + Video and then to video library. I created a folder called Movies on my Seagate FreeAgent 1.5 TB drive to hold movies and Media Center displays that folder. I don’t even have to run Media Center on the PC after adding a movie. Media Center on the XBox 360 finds newly added movies just fine, even before Media Center on the PC.

I plan to rip all my movies this way so I can have all my movies ready to watch without leaving the comfort of my couch.

Mapping Printer Problem with Vista

December 29, 2008

A few months ago I wrote about the problems I had with my wife’s Vista laptop and trying to map network drives. That solution turned out to be creating a directory link (scroll to the end for the instructions on create a directory link to aid in creating drive mappings).

Yesterday I hooked up the boys new XBox 360 to the network and made it a media extender to my Desktop PC running Vista/Media Center. My wife’s Vista laptop notified her about the media extender (XBox), and then she could not print anymore. The printer is in the closet with my Windows 2003 Server.

I eventually found this thread that showed how to add a network printer as a local printer. Yes, I said add it as a local printer. You select the option to create a port and I put in the IP address of the Server with the name of the printer. It mapped perfectly. I used the IP address because of the previous issue above where we needed to use the IP address to get the drive mappings working.

I hope this helps someone out there some day!

GM Will Shink Into Oblivion

December 2, 2008

From Automotive News:

The General Motors of 2012 will have fewer brands and nameplates, thousands fewer dealers and employees, and much less debt on its balance sheet, under a restructuring plan GM gave Congress today. GM will focus on its “core brands” of Chevrolet, Buick, GMC and Cadillac, the plan says. GM will sell Saab, shrink Pontiac to a niche brand and consider selling or closing Saturn, GM President Fritz Henderson told reporters at a briefing today. GM also plans to trim its U.S. dealerships from today’s 6,450 to about 4,700, Henderson said. It will cut about one-third of the nameplates from its vehicle lineup. GM executives say the plan will enable the company to be profitable even if the U.S. new-vehicle market makes only a modest recovery.

Well, GM is giving up. They have clearly spelled out a plan to cut costs to the point of not making many cars. Why bother making better cars?

In my opinion this will hurt the American economy. We are talking about close to 2000 dealerships and their employees out of work. We are also talking about lawsuits like the ones GM dealt with when it shut down Oldsmobile. Remember, when they closed Olds they never recovered any of the customer that bought the vehicles Olds was producing. Oldsmobile was producing over 250,000 vehicles a year. Yes, that was poor, but Pontiac & Buick never saw an increase from customers moving over. Those customers went to the foreign nameplates. Pontiac & Saturn dealers should start planning to be out of business within the next few years. There is no way Pontiac will survive as a niche maker of cars. They are no Mini or Scion.

One good thing can come from this. When the auto industry rebounds GM will be able to grow again… if it learns how to build cars people actually want. If they keep bean counting their offerings until they are dull, lifeless cars then GM is going to continue to shrink until it dies.

Good luck GM, you’re going to need it.

Did you ever think about a plan that included firing all your executives responsible for getting you into this position, and getting rid of your Board of Directors that let them do it? Now that would be a plan. Get the real car guys and engineers to build great cars that people will stand in line to buy. That’s an even better plan.
