if this is the best they can come up with. they need to hire new car designers. more innovative designers. more edgy, more somethin. sorry chevy you could do better but you dont. i dont get it. why dont you see it. its right there in front of you. but you dont imbrace it for the consumer. look at farari, look at lamberghini. i want one of those. i dont want your cheap 300 chrysler imotation of a charger. if i want a charger ill get a charger not a camero.

  2. Scott Says:

    peep game,

You have a lot to learn.

    1) You are comparing a Camaro to a Ferrari or Lamborghini. Yea, I want one of those too, but I am not a millionaire… nor are you. Those cars require a small fortune to upkeep beyond their deep six figure price. A Camaro for under $30K is something you might be able to afford.

    2) You compare a Camaro to a Chrysler 300 or Dodge Charger. Four door sedans against a coupe. Not quite following you on that one. The Camaro, if imitating anything is imitating the Mustang… as is the new Dodge Challenger.

    3) As for design… I can tell you for a fact… car designers HATE retro designs. They would rather come up with something new, rather than update a 35 year old design. However, retro is in right now, so I think they did a good job making the old Camaro look like a modern car. If anything, the reaction to Bubble Bee in the Transformers movie by nearly everyone is proof that the design was well worth the effort.

I love it, I just sold my 69 RS that was completely restored. I am putting the money in a CD for 1 year and than hopefully I will be able to order the
2010 Chevrolet camaro convertible in January 2009 (400 HP 6 Speed) Hugger Orange with black Z-28 stripes. Does anyone know where I can view in person the Concept camaro?
    Thanks,

  6. Dean Sellers Says:

I think I know what “peep game” meant by comparing it to a Charger – the front end is too damn chunky. I have a ’68 Camaro, and have always loved the design of the 67-69 models; the tapered nose and the muscular back end (I like big booties!) The new design brought some of the muscular look back into the rear, however the front doesn’t have the graceful downward curve. It just looks too squared off.

  7. Scott Says:

    Dean,

I can see your point about the “chunky” nose, especially in a profile view. But I am pretty sure that current crash requirements forced a more “substantial” front end. One thing about the new Camaro (and the new Challenger) to me is that they look like the old cars when the old cars were missing their front bumpers. I have seen a few Camaros particularly in magazines and at car shows that have no front bumper. They do this for a clean look, but I think this trend started when they couldn’t find bumpers (back in the early 80′s there weren’t restoration places where you could buy new replacement bumpers and you had to find old ones and have them re-chromed).

    Thanks for the input,
    Scott

I’ve been looking forward to the new Camaro release for a long time. I drove one for almost 13 years. Until some jerk totalled it my parking lot! Of all the luck. Anyway, I plan to buy one after about 6 or 8 months after the release.

  9. Michael G Smith Says:

Very nice Car, I used to have a 1969 Coupe, and all I can say is get the F’n thing on the lots already, Ive seen pictures and read all the talk but, quit postponing this or people are going to lose interest and end up going with the new Challenger instead.
Come on, I want one NOW!

  10. Ted Roper Says:

I just saw the press release from GM on the 2010 Camaro. I, like many others, have been waiting for the return of the F-body (or whatever it may be called in the future).

In 1993, I purchased one of the first 4th generation cars (a Pontiac Firebird Formula, 275 HP LT1, with 6 Spd Trans.) and have enjoyed it immensely. I still have the car but don’t use it a great deal anymore. For the past three years I have more or less planned on getting a new Camaro to replace it.

I am now having second thoughts, however. According to the press release, the new car will have two engine options: a 300 hp V-6 and a 400 to 420 hp ls V-8. Since it appears that the v-8 models will have a list price at or above 30K, which is more than I want to spend on a casual use car, I would probably be more interested one of the V-6′s which apparently will be priced in the mid $20K range.

My second thoughts result from this: according to the press release, these cars are going to have a curb weight just shy of 4,000 lbs. No performance data was given except that expected fuel ecomony would be 26 MPG highway mileage. While gas mileage is not a critical factor, I seriously wonder whether the performance of any of the V-6 cars will be any better than my old LT1 Firebird. It has a curb weight of roughly 3,450 lbs. and indeed gets anywhere from 25 to 28 MPG on the highway. In its day, according to the automotive press, 0 – 60 times were sub 6 seconds and it had a top speed north of 150 MPH.

The question in my mind is whether one of the 300HP v-6 cars can equal, let alone exceed the performance of the old LT1 cars? If not, I, and probably many others, have waited a long time to be disappointed.

  11. Scott Says:

I can tell you that the V6 will not match the performance of the 93 F-Bodies with the LT1. I t0o had a 93 (Camaro Z28). It was road tested in its day to get 5.6-5.7 seconds 0-60. I just sold mine this past November. Anyway, the new cars are going to be heavy because they are going on an Aussie platform that will be used for other (read: bigger) rear wheel drive cars. It is the same as the Challeger which is on the same platform as the Charger/300, so it weighs in excess of 4,000 lbs.

I believe the Camaro is getting a variation of the new 304 hp direct injection V6 from the new 2008 Cadillac CTS. I expect the weight to be about the same as that Caddy too. So if you want to know how fast it is going to be and what kind of mileage it will get you should read road tests of the new CTS. The Camaro may be a little lighter (not more than 200 lbs, though) and might be geared for quicker acceleration, but not more than a couple of tenths worth. Expect 0-60 in the 6.0 – 6.5 second range for the V-6. Not that much slower than your 93. In fact, it might FEEL faster because it will surely be newer and your “old” car may not be running as fast as new (if it is stock).

As for mileage… they just re-did the EPA rating system so a highway mileage rating of 26 is about equal to a highway rating of about 28 in 93 terms. My 93 Camaro was rated at 23 highway (with an automatic). Your 6 speed model was probably rated no higher than 25 at the time. If you are matching that highway mileage you should be able to exceed the new standard with the same driving style.

Now… you must be close to my age if you too are the original owner of a 93 F-Body. I rarely can drive faster enough to make use of all 300 hp in my 07 335i, I expect you will have the same issue. Unless you are street racing or real racing I think 300 hp is enough to have a lot of fun. I would love 422 hp (what I heard was going to be the V8 engine rating), but I want better than 23 MPG highway (what the new V8 is going to be rated at). You might want to test drive one before you decide not to buy. If I could get one I would seriously consider it.

I can’t wait to turn 16 and buy this car! I think its freakin sweeeet. I’m getting the convertible 400hp v-6. im not gonna race, parctially because my dad would explode, so there is no interest for a v-8. plus i dont have 30G’s. so imma settle for a v-6. I like that its not gonna eat up all my gas money and burn a whole there. :D plus the body is deffently sexy. ive been looking for a hot convertible thats not lamborgini expensive or run down either. I hope this will come out reeaal soon so I can test drive it and fall more in love with it. :D

  13. Ash Says:

I love the fact the side profile of this new car looks alot like the ’69, the old camaros are by far some of my favorite cars and if this is anything like them chevy are on to a winner. BUT i doubt ill see many of these cars ‘coz living in the UK the import and reg’ costs would be utterly horrific and the fact im just about to finish the final year of secondary school (A.K.A high school) im not gonna have enough dough to get my self one of these beasts. maybe ill end up restoreing a ’69 who knows. and the wish lists you created sounds like just the kind of thing chevy should do if they want to sell these in the currently, what can only be described as, bluddy awefull economic situation. im looking forward to seeing one of these on top gear but im pretty sure ill never see one up close unless i go to the auto show.

one more point; your wish list said make it smothe and quiet but to be honest if i want that ill buy a Nissan not a Chevy Camaro, i like having to stick the clutch through the floor and hearing the gearbox crunch into place while knowing everyone who was sitting behind me is now deaf, its the whole fun of driving an all american muscle car, that and it really pisses off the neighbours ;)

(this is the first time ive read your blog and i found it a perfect time waster when im ment to be doing school work)

Think you very much for making this car I hav to get one it is the hottest car on the market

  15. Mags Says:

I think this car looks great. Coming from the UK, I believe British and European car manufactureres make the best cars in thr world. And I agree with what Peep Game says to an extent. Sure, the likes of Lamborghini and Ferrari are beautiful: they, among many others, represent the ‘French Riviera’ type lifestyle that many cars could only dream of doing. However, while the Italians boast with their Lambos and Ferraris; the Germans with their Porches, BMWs and Mercedes; and us plucky Brits with such national institutions as Jaguar Landrover, Bentley and Rolls-Royce (granted, they’re now all owned by Indian or German companies), they simply aren’t ‘Muscle Cars’. That’s one thing you guys do that no other country in the world can. I think British and European cars are superior in a technical sense (and it looks like the Japanese are overtaking that), but they don’t have the raw, gritty, maverick passion of a Muscle Car. Muscle Cars have just as much tradition, and can truly be referred to as classic. I imagine a lot of Americans look lustfully across the pond at our cars. We do the same to your Muscle Cars. I love Lambos etc, but I also love Shelbys. I think Ferraris are cool, but I think Charger’s are cooler. Like I said earlier, European Supercars represent the super-rich lifestyle – Muscle cars represent rebellion, attitude and freedom. I grew up watching shows like Knight Rider, Dukes of Hazzard and the A-Team: those shows featured cars that many British kids grew up wanting. Cars over here tend to be smooth, sleek, stlyish, but Muscle Cars are brutal, big and boxy. They look like they mean business and blend contemporary design will echoes of their hayday. And I love that. I don’t think American Muscle Cars are better than European Supercars, they are just refreshingly different. It’s blue-blooded tradition versus blue-collared engineering (remember when the Ford GT thumped Ferrari at Le Mans four years in a row?). After all, whether you’re into blondes or brunettes, you know they can both be stunning, right? :-) Also, you have to take into account how much these cars all cost in comparison: a new Lamborghini demands a hell of a lot more loot than a new top-of-the-range Shelby. I think this Camaro looks great, so too its resurrected peers such as the Mustang and the Challenger.

They say they will not be built now until next year, or maybe even Feb 2011. Regardles, I am first on the list at the local Chevy dealer for a Camero Convertible. I told the Dealership owner (a buddy from way back) that I want one in Orange, with everything.

I could not afford one in 1969 when i was 17.

    This time, I get one.

Now, I can see a supercharger and 21 inch wheels on it, and maybe…..

  17. Trish Says:

Alls I have to say is I gotta have this soon! Rocky Q. for you, what Chevy Dealer are you talking about – are there any more Chevy dealers out there – not very many? I want want want this car NOW!!!
